Summary: A major new talent on the international art scene, Robin Rhode's art uses the barest of means to comment on urban poverty, the politics of leisure and the commodification of youth cultures. This title presents a catalogue for Robin Rhode's exhibition at The Hayward, London, 7 October to 7 December, 2008. A major new talent on the international art scene, Robin Rhode's art uses the barest of means to comment on urban poverty, the politics of leisure and the commodification of youth cultures. Born in Cape Town and raised in Johannesburg, Rhode has a reputation for brilliantly inventive performances, photography and video animations in which drawing plays a crucial role. In these works, which are often created on the street, Rhode interacts with two-dimensional representations of everyday objects: he draws a candle and attempts to blow it out; he paints a bicycle and tries to ride it. Recently, he has moved towards more poetic abstract forms in paintings and drawings and has also begun to make sculpture. "Robin Rhode: Who Saw Who" includes an interview with Stephanie Rosenthal and essays by Michele Robecchi and James Sey. This is the catalogue for Robin Rhode's exhibition at The Hayward, London, 7 October to 7 December, 2008.
