Fineman demonstrates that today's digitally manipulated images originate from the earliest years of photography, encompassing methods as diverse as overpainting, multiple exposure, negative retouching, combination printing, and photomontage. She shows photography to be an inspired blend of fabricated truths and artful falsehoods.
