Brigitte Bardot plays a promiscuous seductress in the film which made her an international sex symbol. Married to fisherman Jean-Louis Trintignant, she seduces his brother (Christian Marquand) and maintains an attachment to wealthy, middle-aged Curt Jurgens. Bardot spends much of the time semi-naked or in very tight clothing. Director Roger Vadim, Bardot's husband at the time, re-made this film in 1987 with Rebecca de Mornay.
